L. Tip of Palaio Faliro local History:

(F2) Palaio Faliro played an important role in the history of Athens. It was the second seaport (after Piraeus) and functioned as a base and shelter of the Athenian fleet. Local hero Faliro took part in the Argonauts adventure and his descendants founded the city of Palaeopolis in Sicily which was renamed Neapolis after the advent and other Greek Euboea colonists. From this port the ancient hero Theseus left with the fourteen young men and women to kill Minotaur and returned victorious. To honor him the local people celebrated a kind of sea festival the "Governmentials"(Kyvernissia). Again, it was this port in which king Xerxes landed in 480B.C. and put Athens on fire; it was again this same point from where he left in panic after the debacle of Salamis. Famous ancient personalities as Plato and Demosthenes are connected with Faliro. The last on the rocks and the sea of Faliron was preparing (abrading) his speeches. The local people (Palaiofaliriotes) honor up to date the history and heroes with projects and events like Olympic venues, ancient street names etc
