On the square are several cafes. In the colouful Dimopratiriou Square nearby you will find tavernas with traditional Greek food.

The street is named after the God Hermes, the protector of the trade. Ermou street was one of the first streets paved by Kleanthis and Schaubert. More than 60 years, from the late 19th century to the 1960s', it was the centre of women's fashion. It s one of the best areas for shopping in the capital. You will find a variety of silver, among others, candle holders, bowls, vases and jewellery, often hand made goods produced in Greece in Shops at Lekka Str, wich connects Perikleous Str. and Kolokotroni Str. and the nearby arcades. Also in the picturesque Evangelistrias STr. and Agiou Markou streets there are many shops selling clothing and shoes at very reasonable prices.
In the section Ermou Str. closest to Syntagma Square you will find the Kapnikarea Church.

"Κατεβαίνοντας την οδό Ερμού, αν είστε τυχερός, μπορείτε να δείτε και να ακούσετε μια λατέρνα,, ένα αυτόματο μουσικό όργανο που γνώρισε μεγάλη δόξα στο παρελθόν. Πριν από την ανακάλυψη του γραμμόφωνου ήταν ο μόνος τρόπος για να ακούσει ο κόσμος μουσική χωρίς να χρειάζεται την φυσική παρουσία μουσικών. Γυρίζοντας την μανιβέλα με το χέρι, η λατέρνα έπαιζε τον σκοπό..
Η λατέρνα στην Ελλάδα γνώρισε μεγάλη δόξα μετά το 1855 με τα εν λειτουργία όργανα να περνούν τα 5.000! Το όργανο αυτό "λατέρνα" είναι υπερβολικά διακοσμημένο. Στα ελληνικά ο όρος χρησιμοποιείται περιπαιχτικά να περιγράψει μια γυναίκα υπερβολικά ντυμένη. Πολλές όμορφες ιστορίες υπάρχουν γύρω από αυτό το όργανο καθώς και κινηματογραφικές ταινίες.
